This program offers students from all over the world a short-term study abroad experience focusing on the acquisition and deepening of academic knowledge, German language skills and intercultural competence.

Tübingen Summer International European Studies | Germany

The 6 week IES Summer Program is designed for students with an interest in Europe. You study European politics, culture, history, and the German language in a variety of diverse academic introductory courses, each held by University of Tübingen and OSU faculty.

The International European Studies Program Offers:

  • Academic courses taught in English by University of Tübingen faculty
  • Study trips and visits of European institutions
  • German language class
  • Workshop “Intercultural Competence”
  • Various social activities
  • Buddy Program: A student from the University of Tübingen supports you before and during your stay in Tübingen. The Buddy Program promotes intercultural exchange and will allow you to get to know German student life first-hand.

The program also includes excursions to Berlin, Strasbourg, and throughout the Baden-Württemberg region.

Program Duration:

  • Summer: 6 weeks in July and August
  • Dates: July 14 – August 22, 2020

“Europe & the European Union”

Academic introductory courses (taught in English):

  • History and Politics of the European Union
  • Global Citizenship, Minority Rights, and Interculturality in Europe
  • A Union divided? A Union reunited! The European Union and the Politics of Brexit
  • On the economy of the EU: its integration, crises, and future outlook

“Language & Culture”

No German language? No problem!

  • German language courses on the proficiency levels A1-B2 (beginner to intermediate)
  • Workshop on intercultural competence

Excursions (travel costs included in Program Fee)

  • European Parliament in Strasbourg (1 day)
  • Historic center and government district of Berlin (3 days)

Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA in order to participate.

Accommodation will be arranged by the Program and is covered by the program fee. Tübingen is a university town with a high number of students and availability of rooms in student dormitories is very limited.

Depending on availability, you will be either accommodated in a guest house, with a host family, in a student shared flat or in a student dorm. You will either have your own room or share it with one other program participant. Kitchen and bathroom are used jointly. Bed sheets will be provided, but you should bring your own towels.

Private accommodation cannot be organized through the Program. In case you want to make your own arrangements for private accommodation please inform us in advance.

The program fee is includes:

  • All courses within the modules “Europe & the European Union” and “Language & Culture”
  • Course materials
  • 3-day stay at a guesthouse (full board)
  • 1-day excursion to Strasbourg (transfer, guided tours, entrance fees, 1 dinner)
  • 3-day excursion to Berlin (transfer, accommodation, guided tours, entrance fees, 1 dinner)
  • Accommodation in Tübingen
  • Cultural and social activities
  • A public transportation ticket for use within Tübingen
  • Welcome and graduation reception

The following expenses are not included in the program fee and have to be covered by the participant:

  • Visa fee (if applicable, US Citizens do not need an entry visa into Germany)
  • Flight & travel to/from Tübingen
