Tübingen Summer International European Studies | Germany

This 6 week Summer Program is designed for students with an interest in European Politics and Society. The theme of the program is European Union Politics, Human Rights and Economics and also includes a German Language and Culture module. All classes are taught in English and no prior experience with German is required. A key feature of the program is integrated excursions to locations such as the historic center and government district of Berlin, the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, and the financial district in Frankfurt. Also included are local cultural activities, social gatherings, and a buddy program to connect with Universtiy of Tuebingen students.  Participants are from multiple areas of the world and space is limited.

Program Duration:

  • Summer: 6 weeks in July and August
  • Dates: July 11 – August 19, 2022

The IES summer program consists of two combined modules:

Module "Europe & the European Union" (5 credits)

Academic introductory courses (taught in English):
  • The Political System of the EU and its Politics
  • Human Rights in Europe: Current Issues and Challenges
  • Regional Economic Integration
Study Trips:

Each of the three mandatory study trips is linked to one of the academic courses above:

  • 4-day study trip to Berlin (historic center and government district)
  • 1-day study trip to Strasbourg (visit to the European Parliament)
  • 1-day study trip to Frankfurt (financial district)

Module "Language & Culture" (2 credits)

  • No German? No problem!
  • German language courses for proficiency levels A1-B2
  • Workshop on intercultural competence

Accommodation will be arranged by the Program and is covered by the program fee. Tübingen is a university town with a high number of students and availability of rooms in student dormitories is limited.

Depending on availability, you will be either accommodated in a guest house, with a host family, in a student shared flat or in a student dorm. You will either have your own room or share it with one other program participant. Kitchen and bathroom are shared.

The program fee is includes:

  • All courses and credits within the modules “Europe & the European Union” and “Language & Culture”
  • Course materials
  • 3-day stay at a guesthouse (full board)
  • 1-day excursion to Strasbourg (transfer, guided tours, entrance fees, 1 dinner)
  • 3-day excursion to Berlin (transfer, accommodation, guided tours, entrance fees, 1 dinner)
  • Accommodation in Tübingen
  • Cultural and social activities
  • A public transportation ticket for use within Tübingen
  • Welcome and graduation reception

The following expenses are not included in the program fee and have to be covered by the participant:

  • Visa fee (if applicable, US Citizens do not need an entry visa into Germany)
  • Flight & travel to/from Tübingen
