Mt. Taranaki

During my internship abroad in New Zealand I had the opportunity to partake in a transformative experience that left an indelible impact on my life by hiking Mt. Taranaki.  As I embarked on this challenging journey, I discovered valuable insights about myself, gained a deeper understanding of human nature, and learned important lessons about interacting across cultures.

Firstly, hiking Mount Taranaki taught me a great deal about myself. The arduous climb tested my physical endurance and mental resilience, pushing me to my limits. As I persisted through the steep ascents, my inner strength and determination were revealed to me in ways I had never experienced before. Overcoming the physical and mental challenges of the hike made me realize that I can achieve more than I had ever imagined. It taught me the importance of pushing beyond my comfort zone and embracing challenges as opportunities for personal growth.

Secondly, the journey up Mt. Taranaki provided me with profound insights into human nature. The hike was organized by a company called Got to Get Out which is a social adventure group. Through this organization, I met other international interns and other adventure-seeking individuals from diverse backgrounds, each with their own motivations and aspirations. I observed that, in the face of a common goal, people from different cultures and walks of life were willing to support and encourage one another. The camaraderie that developed among us was a testament to the inherent kindness and empathy that can arise when individuals come together with a shared purpose. Witnessing the compassion and unity among our newly developed friendships reinforced my belief in the fundamental goodness of humanity.

Lastly, hiking Mt. Taranaki allowed me to develop crucial skills for interacting across cultures. As an intern in a foreign country, I was already navigating the challenges of adapting to a new environment and working with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds. The hike presented an additional opportunity to interact with locals and fellow travelers from different parts of the world. Engaging in conversations, sharing stories, and learning about their unique perspectives broadened my cultural understanding and enhanced my ability to connect with people from various backgrounds. It taught me the importance of curiosity, open-mindedness, and respect when engaging with individuals from different cultures.

In conclusion, hiking Mt. Taranaki during my internship abroad was a pivotal moment that left a lasting impact on my personal and professional development. Through this experience, I discovered my own resilience, witnessed the kindness inherent in human nature, and honed my skills for interacting across cultures. It served as a reminder that stepping outside of my comfort zone and embracing new challenges can lead to profound growth and meaningful connections. The lessons learned from hiking Mt. Taranaki will continue to shape my perspective and actions as I navigate future endeavors and engage with diverse communities around the world.
