IE3 Global collaborates with New Zealand Internships (NZI) to provide high-quality, personalized internship opportunities for students interested in technology, engineering, and computer science. NZI matches students to internships based on industry interest, professional and academic experience, and personal goals. Interns should consider relevant previous experience and desired professional development at the time of application to facilitate the identification of a relevant opportunity.

Internship Start Dates:

  • Flexible start dates at the beginning of any academic term.

Duration of Internship:

  • 10-12 weeks, minimum.

New Zealand Internships (NZI) has been coordinating internships with a focus on exceptional service and a well-rounded experience for each intern since 2007. By working with students personally, the NZI team tailors internships and services to each individual. Based in Auckland, NZI places students across the country in 3 or 6-month internships. In addition to a varied internship portfolio, NZI provides additional support for participants on-site, including travel and social activities.

New Zealand Internships works with a variety of host organizations that offer internships working in technology, engineering, and computer science. Some may have a specific focus, while others may provide exposure to many different areas of study. Two fields and some sample placements are:

Engineering

  • Electrical Engineer for a small design and manufacturing company, design software and make functional prototypes of potentiostats/galvanostats
  • Development Engineer for a leading supplier of optical touch panels, design and develop optical components and assembly, evaluate components, liaise with vendors
  • Civil Engineer for a construction and civil contractor, assist site engineers and field staff, monitor compliance, and administration
  • Fire Engineer for a national organization providing fire and emergency services, assist with information storage, index, revise internal documentation, develop a flow-chart of construction design, familiarization of New Zealand building legislation

Information Technology (IT)

  • Technical Consultant for a global leader in systems management software, provide customer support and remote fixes, liaise with Cortex Development, improve support documentation, assist with upgrades
  • IT Database for an international film sales agency, map and analyze the company’s IT processes, as well as develop and implement improvements
  • IT Business for a small IT services company in Auckland, customer support, marketing and social media, client follow-up, and development of business systems
  • Document Management for a university, assist with a new document management system for the computing department, document tracking systems for faculty management, and deployment of a faculty research website
  • Business Developer for an IT security, network, and system integration company, work with Windows Servers, networking, TCPIP, hardware, and security
  • IT Analyst with a management solutions company, provide user and production support, machine setups, data preparation and manipulation, and system improvements
  • Software Developer with a mobile billing company, develop a front-end for system signup using PHP or Java

Academic Background:

  • Interns with a background and experience in fields related to technology, engineering, and computer science are encouraged to apply.

Skills / Experience:

  • Interns are expected to demonstrate responsibility, professional motivation, flexibility, and effective communication skills.
  • Specific software and hardware experience is beneficial and may be required for some placements.

Language Requirements:

  • English is the language of communication. Interns must be capable of written and spoken communication at a near-native level in professional settings.

Visa Requirements:

  • Interns must be eligible for a Working Holiday Visa for their country of citizenship (for example: USA). For more information, visit the New Zealand Department of Immigration website. Applicants are expected to complete an preliminary review of visa requirements to ensure their eligibility before submitting their application.

Host Site Fee Details

  • Arrangement of the personal tailored internship placement
  • Help finding long term accommodation (this can be advice or actual offers of accommodation)
  • Airport transfer (optional for Auckland candidates only - and at a small charge)
  • New Zealand Arrival pre-arrival advice
  • Online pre-arrival orientation
  • Invites to events and activities (where possible)
  • Introduction to other interns (if multiple candidates are at location)
  • Certificate of Participation (upon request)

NZI-Assisted Housing

NZI offers assistance in locating and securing accommodation in New Zealand. Payment for accommodation is due to the local landlord/provider.

  • For Auckland placements, interns may choose from city apartments (downtown), intern houses in local suburbs, or homestays. All housing options are furnished and offer private bedrooms.
  • For non-Auckland placements, accommodation options depend on location and availability.

Independent Housing

Interns may arrange their own housing if they do not choose NZI-Assisted housing.
