- Focus: Sexual and Reproductive Health, Family Planning, Public Health, Outreach and Education
- Location: 10 weeks in Quito, Ecuador
Through CFHI, work with pioneering non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on sexual and reproductive health issues in Ecuador. Learn first-hand about the challenges of carrying out these initiatives in a predominantly Catholic and socially conservative country. Here, stigmas about sexuality, lingering gender inequality and traditional gender roles continue to impact access to family planning services and sexual health education, resulting in preventable STIs, unwanted pregnancies and continued prejudice against LGBT communities.
Interns learn about educational and outreach strategies used to educate populations of different ages and socio-economic status regarding sexual and reproductive health. Please note that rotation sites are not clinical in nature. Participants will be involved in public health outreach education campaigns at the grassroots level. Participants can choose to rotate with the Quito offices of CEMOPLAF or EQUIDAD (or both). In addition to their individual efforts, both of these organizations have collaborated with each other and other likeminded groups in Ecuador that participants will have a chance to visit.
Beginning Spanish required but intermediate Spanish is strongly recommended. Intensive Spanish language courses and homestays are included in the internship.
